Today’s dive watches are so often marketed as fashion statements that it’s become relatively rare for a company to design one as a straight-up, thoroughbred diving tool. The newly designed Aquadive Bathyscaphe is the brand’s current flagship model, and this new watch is loosely based on that large watch with the depth gauge, the legendary Aquadive Model 50. Those are all gone now, so today Aquadive produces its cases in Germany, and it sources its movements and performs assembly in Switzerland. In 2011, avid dive watch collector Rick Marei brought Aquadive back to life, first with watches built into new-old-stock cases he acquired along with the company. But Aquadive, like so many other watch brands, didn’t survive the ascendency of electronic quartz watches.

If you are lucky, they show up close enough to the road and you can observe them well. In addition, the low saltwater has ensured that Caribbean flamingos are common here. This algae is eaten by shrimps, turning the Pekelmeer pink in colour. Due to the extreme salt water, only one species of algae survives in these conditions. The Pekelmeer is part of the salt extraction process and is also an important area for animals. Located at the salt flats is the Pink Brine Lake. This whole process can take up to a year! Seawater runs into the shallow salt lake and is evaporated by the bright sun. For salt extraction to occur, all it takes is sun, wind and a shallow salt lake. Bonaire is therefore known as the ideal island for salt extraction. On Bonaire, salt pans arise naturally from seawater. So be sure to take a look at the salt pans when you go on your Bonaire holiday. Today, the salt pans are owned by Canadian company Cargill and the industry has been revived.
